Ditch the Pitch
Written on 13 October 2009

At some point in every designers career, they're going to be a part of a pitch for an account. I've personally been involved in a few while I was employed by agencies both here in South Africa, as well as in the UK. Some were successful, others not so much.

Many agencies will go all out to win a pitch - putting some of the best creative minds on the job, spending hours conceptualising, strategising and designing some really exceptional creative. All this and no guarantee on return.

Personally, I think the idea of a pitch is ludicrous. Let me illustrate my point.

I would like an architectural masterpiece - a 6 bedroom, double-storey mansion that will be the envy of Jones's everywhere. I approach 3 different master builders and provide them with a detailed brief asking them to build me this house. Many days later they all proudly present their fine work. I choose my favourite, reward the builder handsomely, and send the other two on their way with a smile and a firm handshake.

I understand a client would like to have an idea of the kind of creative they can expect, and it is for this reason we make available a broad portfolio of work showing a full range of applications and creative. Alternatively should a client want a specific proposal designed for their consideration we would be glad to oblige upon acceptance of a quote covering the costs for producing the proposal.
