Ode to Word
Written on 10 February
Isn't it just a matter of copy and paste? How hard can it be? Just quickly put something together. It shouldn't take long.
I'm sure many a PA has heard these fateful words from their boss. 10 hours, 6 fonts and a dazzling array of colours and shapes later, a completely frazzled PA is seriously considering typing up a letter of resignation rather than hand this Word-of-Art to a soon to be ex-boss.
Word has its place - and as the name would suggest, it's somewhere in the realm of literary wonder. Perhaps a quick memo, notice, invitation or the like. But attempting that 6-panel z-fold DL brochure... For those that have, a valuable lesson is learnt: Some things are just not as easy as they seem.
Designers have not spent at least 3 years in Design School learning how to push "Ctrl-C" and "Ctrl-V" - just as a master builder hasn't spent his apprenticeship learning how to add water to ready-mix cement.
Years of experience, degrees and formal training are about making the effortful seems effortless - a lesson that can be learnt in about 10 hours, with 6 fonts and a dazzling array of colours and shapes.
Word, if nothing else, can be very educational.
